and, lest you think everything is all perfecto, here is our current favorite bath toy...
at least it's from the motherland, right?
(i thought of starting a weekly post revealing such secrets as these and calling it bad, bad, mama. what do you think?)

hi mary.
yep. defensive is right. sheesh. i was feeling like i was going to crack from exhaustion and as a result was sensitive to your comment, taking it in the worst possible light. i didn't offer you one single ounce of empathy. you were trying to be helpful. you were offering a perspective that you thought might be what i was looking for (eg the balance between exploration and keeping them safe). i didn't see that in the moment and i wrote back to you in an explosive, reactive and abrasive way.
i am sorry. of course you are still welcome to take me off your faves. i just wanted you to know that my thinking had shifted.

You're the one that pointed out 'your current bath toy' and were going to have a weekly post called 'bad, bad, mama'. I thought that's what you referring to and it seemed to go over everyone's head thinking you were talking about paint! I simply asked. I too don't say no to my kids a lot so they can 'explore'. Defensive!
Don't worry, I'll just delete you off my favorites.

Mary. Your comment is offensive and absurd.

Do you think the picture could be thought of as bad because of the sharp opening on the top of the cans? That's what I first thought of when I saw the picture. I know you don't like to say no to your children so they can explore their world but you also have to think about keeping them safe from harm.

oh but now our neighbor offered her grapes to can grape juice, so i might not be done yet. apple butter and salsa, yum. yeahhhh. crazy how insane the house gets during canning season. have you planted the garlic yet?

I like the bathtime ingenuity.
I haven't quite put away my canner yet, but getting damn near close. Just some apple butter left, oh and salsa. And then freedom! (or maybe I'll actually clean the house).

lol So cute! At least they are obviously empty. At night when we have a drink we always get our son his "coctail" (juice w/water). He's been drinking from a real wine glass since before he was 2.

hi miranda. yah..as soon as i wrote bad, bad, i felt, well, bad. (heehee). there is no such thing as bad. there is just life. sometimes i think we put this pressure on ourselves to be a certain way and when things are different than that, we want a label. i felt scared to show that picture because its not all wooden toys and things. fear of being judged. such a trap. thanks for writing. im delighted your kids get to paint themselves. here, here, mama.

I'm not seeing any bad bad here, more like NORMAL. My kids painted themselves this week too.
